of the day, May 7, 2018: An alliance of European associations that have
concerned themselves with the human rights of aboriginal peoples in Canada,
have published a report detailing how the Canadian government has, at least
since 1998, ignored criticisms levelled
under various UN human rights conventions at the treatment of the indigenous
people in Canada. These conventions require that every few years the country
being examined offer a report to the subject, detailing their treatment of the
affected peoples.
This
is a document worth reading, because its criticisms are probably unknown to
most Canadians, who traditionally, and mistakenly, think of themselves as among
the world’s leaders in the field of human, social and economic rights.
