Link of the day (1) Jan 29 2014: Transcript of the late, great Pete Seeger refusing to answer questions from the House Unamerican Activities Committee on August 18, 1955.

Pete Seeger has been a distant presence in my life almost as long as I can remember. I took my growing children to hear him whenever he appeared, especially during those many years when he was banned from appearing on United States TV or radio. He was one of those brave souls who refused to answer questions about his activities on behalf of socialism before the House Unamerican Activities Committee in 1955. Read the transcript of his appearance, as he pissed off the witch-hunters of the Committee. He served time in jail for contempt of the Committee, but later won on appeal. Unlike many other important cultural figures, he never incriminated anyone by naming the names the Committee was trying to get out of him.  Read the transcript  here, and reflect
