Uri
Avnery, that doughty Israeli journalist, has written an excellent article in
which he says, basically, that any hope for Israeli/Palestinian peace lies
with Barack Obama. He says Obama’s new Secretary of State, John Kerry, seems to
have been working sincerely to bring the two sides together around the
long-standing Arab offer of peace based on the 1967 borders. He has won some
concessions from the Arab side, but Obama’s boy, Netanyahu appears to be trying
everyrthing he can to find a way of refusing without offending Obama.
Therefore, says Avnery, it is over to whether Obama really has the courage to
do it, or not.
He
writes: “If President Obama has the will and the power to compel the government
of Israel to make this historic decision and choose peace, may the political
price for the president be as it may, then he should proceed. If this will and
this power do not exist, the whole great peace effort is an exercise in
deception, and honorable men should not indulge in it. They should honestly
face the two sides and the world and tell them: No, We Can’t.”
